CWCF Episode 21 – Selfish Knitting Month Recap

Episode 21 of the podcast is up.

I reflect on the two sweaters of the moment. Melbourne and my Drops Yoke. I also reflect a bit on knitting in the movie theater.

Natalie’s Yarn Calculating Spreadsheet

Yarnstash spreadsheet.

Feel free to make a copy of this spreadsheet for your own use and adapt it as you need to. Use the instructions on the spreadsheet tab at the bottom labeled “Instructions.”

Note: I tried to create a form for this spreadsheet for easy entry, but I haven’t yet figured out how to get the formula for calculating total yardage to work with the entries added via the form.

I do suggest that you play around with this spreadsheet after you’ve saved it yourself. It’s been a great too for me because now I can always find that odd ball or skein no matter where it is in my stash. I can also take a look at this list and remind myself… I don’t need anymore yarn!

#knitchat 1/20/2011 – Selecting Yarn

Yarn is what keeps most of us knitters going. Over the past decade or so it seems like knitters have many more choices. There’s so much to choose from. Sometimes you want the softest of soft to touch your hands as you work. Sometimes you just need that workhorse yarn to get the job done. This #knitchat we’ll take some time to reflect on our favorites and our dislikes when it comes to yarn. Also, I may be a few minutes late to this one. Just go ahead and start introductions 🙂

QUESTIONS for #knitchat

Introductions – Who are you? Ravelry name (if any), blog or site? Where are you from?

Q1) Share one thing you’ve learned about yarn or fiber recently or not recently. Any knowledge, facts or trivia?

Q2) What is your favorite fiber or fiber combination to work with? Why? Do you like single strands or plied? Any brands or types of yarn?

Q3) Which fibers or yarns do you dislike working with? Any particular reason why?

Q4) Any suggestions for topics for the next #knitchat?

#knitchat 1/13/2011 – Taming that Stash

Update: note we had just a small number of people chime in last week and this topic can always generate chatter. So I’m suggesting that we go ahead and continue the discussion on stash organization.  Also, due to my schedule I have to bump up the time 1 1/2 hours because of a class I’m taking. So the time for knitchat is 6:30 PST & 9:30 EST. Hope this is okay with everyone 🙂

I did finally admit that I have too much… no, I should instead say, “enough yarn” in the last podcast Episode 19.

I’ve catalogued my stash as best as I could, but I’ve only just begun to plan around it. During this knitchat let’s share suggestions for organizing our stash as well as stash management and perhaps even the dreaded ‘stash cull.’

So what do you do or plan to do?

  • Bins or baskets?
  • Labels, spreadsheets or three ring binders with yarn info?
  • Organize by color or by weight?

Just a few things to think about before Thursday’s discussion.
